Helmsley Scrapbooks 1937-2015
Three Helmsley women created an extraordinary record of local history by filling scrapbooks with news cuttings about Helmsley and the local area. Violet Richardson, Norah Scoby and Rose Wright filled 74 Scrapbooks from 1937-2015.
The final article pasted in the 2014-2015 Scrapbook is a double page spread from the Ryedale Gazette and Herald about the Helmsley Archive-owned and managed by Helmsley Town Council. Soon after publication the Scrapbooks were all generously donated to Helmsley Town Council. These books are an absolutely fascinating record of life and lives in Helmsley and the area.
The Scrapbooks have been professionally scanned by the North Yorkshire County Record Office and the Scrapbooks are in storage in Helmsley. The Record Office keeps copies of all local newspapers but the Scrapbooks bring Helmsley’s news over the years together in one place.
